Chapter twenty-one

I want nothing more than to sneak off to my room to have a proper panic attack, but it appears that the faeries have other plans for me. As soon as the announcement is made, music echoes down from the chambers and goblets begin floating through the room. Like just floating there like ghosts are toasting us. Some faeries begin dancing, but most crowd around me. Wanting to touch my hair or my skin or wanting to know my name and everything there is to know about this newest trinket of their world.

When I look around, I see no kindness or gentleness or hope in their expressions. Not even fear. No, only curiosity. Only excitement. Only a ravenous hunger.

I get the feeling that they want to know me now while I’m still alive, so a thousand years from now they can still boast of having known the contender for the role of Fair Assassin who died in the most gruesome way possible. I look up surprised to see the faeries stepping back with disappointed looks on their faces but stepping back all the same. Stunned, I whip my gaze around to the girl who is pulling me away. She’s about my height, which is something odd to see in this world of tall majestic faeries and she has long curly red hair that puts my hair to shame for even considering being strawberry blonde because of the vibrancy of the colors.

She pulls me into a small alcove at the end and turns to me with an easy smile. “Ach, I thought maybe they were going to crush ye if I didn’t get ye out of there.”

I smile in turn, though it feels uncertain, and run my hand over my skirt. Why on earth should she care? Not that we are on Earth anymore. “Thank you.”

I study her more closely; she has bright green eyes and a somewhat pale complexion. Freckles cover her face. She’s
